ROCK SPRING, Ga. (September 20, 2021) – The Jimmy Simpson Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing exceptional care to the traumatic brain injury community, has postponed to April 2022 its first annual Clay Shoot, which had been set to take place October 14-15.

“We were holding out hope that we would be able to still have this wonderful event next month, however, out of an abundance of caution, we want to do our part to protect all of the members of our community due to the coronavirus upswing in the Tennessee Valley. The date change just means that we will have to wait a little longer, but we are still very excited and looking forward to our first annual Clay Shoot,” said Vickie Hodge, CEO of the Jimmy Simpson Foundation.

Proceeds from the event will go towards the foundation’s capital campaign, Foundations for the Future, which is aimed at expanding its Safehaven facility in Walker County, Ga., from 12 to 18 beds to accommodate the rising need for resources for traumatic brain injured and ventilator-dependent individuals in the Chattanooga area. The expanded facility will increase in size to approximately 31,000 square feet, with 28,000 square feet being dedicated to direct services.

“Every single person who contributes to this event is helping us change lives. By moving the date of the Clay Shoot out a bit, we are able to extend the window for businesses to sign up as sponsors. This also gives participants a chance to continue working on their shooting before they show off their skills in the tournament. We will announce information at a later date,” said Hodge.

ROCK SPRING, Ga. (October 4, 2021) – The Jimmy Simpson Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing exceptional care to the traumatic brain injury community, has introduced a slew of new activities to serve adults who are navigating life with a traumatic brain injury.

Since her appointment as Program Administrator in July, Becky Plemmons, RN, has used her years of experience in the medical field to incorporate new activities that provide residents of the foundation’s Safehaven facility with opportunities to learn additional skills that stimulate their brains and help them grow.

“Becky has brought new ideas to the table already and has added activities that the residents of Safehaven have never had the opportunity of doing before. She’s introduced our residents to cooking activities, for example, where they practice putting kabobs on skewers for grilling out, making pizza, and even cooking fajitas and quesadillas. Activities like these allow our residents to grow and learn skills that challenge them, so we are thrilled about this opportunity to stimulate their growth,” said Jessica Malone, COO of the Jimmy Simpson Foundation, which oversees Safehaven.

Safehaven devotes 30 hours each week to provide residents with fun and educational activities that benefit them socially and help build their independence.

“We believe that everyone has the right to a high quality of life, regardless of their mental or physical capabilities. Becky, along with our Safehaven clinical team, is adapting activities for our residents’ personalities and needs, and she has truly taken our mission to heart. Our residents have had the opportunity to go on fishing excursions, and several weeks ago, they celebrated National Water Balloon Day by pelting our staff with water balloons. They are having a blast, and it warms my heart to see the smiles on their faces,” said Malone.

The Jimmy Simpson Foundation is working to raise funds through its capital campaign, Foundations for the Future, to expand Safehaven to 31,000 square feet to provide additional individuals with these activities and the care they need.

ROCK SPRING, Ga. (December 19, 2022) – As people around the world get ready to ring in the new year, the Jimmy Simpson Foundation is preparing to celebrate its 25th year of providing care to individuals with traumatic brain injuries. As part of its preparations for its silver anniversary, the foundation is taking time to reflect on its roots and make goals for the future.

Both the Jimmy Simpson Foundation and its long-term care facility Safehaven were founded by Carol Simpson in 1998 after she struggled to find quality care for her husband Jimmy who had suffered an anoxia brain injury in 1995 from a fall out of a hospital bed. Since opening the doors to Safehaven, the facility has provided care and support to 44 low-level cognitively impaired individuals and their families; the organization has also served close to 100 families through its support group services.

“My mom wanted my dad to receive the best care possible. She looked everywhere for a long-term placement facility that would provide an environment that fostered individuality while also being a safe place he could call home. When her search came up empty, she decided to take matters into her own hands. Now, 25 years later, it is incredible to look back at the remarkable work she did to provide people like my dad with the care they need and deserve,” said Vickie Hodge, daughter of Jimmy Simpson and CEO of the Jimmy Simpson Foundation.

Safehaven currently is able to accommodate 12 residents, but fundraising efforts are underway through the Foundations for the Future campaign to expand the facility. Once completed, the expanded facility will be able to serve 24 residents and will grow to approximately 31,000 square feet, with 28,000 of that space dedicated to direct services.

“Safehaven was such a God send to our family. We lost our Mom/Grandmother who cared for our sister/aunt her whole life after being involved in a horrific hit-and-run accident. It left her paralyzed with a significant brain injury. When our mom/grandmother became ill, and soon after passed away, we had no idea how to care for our loved one, especially in the manner she was accustomed to. We were introduced to this wonderful facility and immediately fell in love with them, and them in love with her. She has been cared for above and beyond any way we could have ever dreamt of. We are forever thankful for everything they do for her and us. We don’t have to worry if she is being taken care of. You can see how happy she is to know that is a fact. They have helped get her treatment for issues we have never been able to get approved or even answers for. The staff is incredible in so many ways and extremely knowledgeable. Thank you so much for taking the greatest care of our sister/aunt,” family members of a Safehaven resident said.
